Re: Comfortable harness or seat for an extended stay on rope
1 hour 40 min agochh wrote:However, Groundquest, you NEED to do some more research into this if you are even thinking of doing it, and here isn't the place to get those answers. It makes me leary of your boss just letting you figure out all that stuff on your own. I would start with whether or not you are eligable for worker's comp, whether the guy you are doing it for is even paying into it etc. Or, if you are working for yourself as an independant contractor and OSHA shows up on your job site, the liability (and potential fines which can be substantial) are worth investigating. While I'm sure you can figure out a way to do the work and keep yourself safe, that is sometimes not enough.
I do these jobs (industrial painting and cleaning) once or twice a year for the same contractor. This is simply the first time we've had to reach such a difficult place. I appreciate your suggestions. In this case however I'm not concerned about OSHA or workman's comp or liabilities and fines, just doing the work and keeping myself safe. The only issues I had with the job have been resolved with the help of these good folks, and now I'm ready to paint.
Thanks everyone.

Fogging Caves during rain events?
1 hour 49 min agoI have seen caves fog during very cold days but sometimes I really wonder if caves fog on rainy days.... (cold or not) This evening it was around 70F and I was peering out my window and noted that fog kept originating from one spot on the mountain and constantly drifted upwards (similiar to chimney smoke). I have noticed this in other places on my caving journeys but was curious if any of you have actually found caves because of this or know of caves that do fog during rain events.

Re: Comfortable harness or seat for an extended stay on rope
6 hours 4 min agoActually, it depends on the industry whether or not you need a full body harness to be OSHA compliant. In my field, arboriculture, you are not required to have a full body harness to work in a tree. I don't know anything about the industry standards for painting or steel work, so can't comment there. A friend of mine worked building roller coasters and they had to have 3 seperate lines. One for positioning, one as fall protection, and another for their tools. All I'm saying is that there are a lot of different regulations.

Re: Maquoketa Caves State Park to re-open
8 hours 9 min agoDoes anybody know any real details of this rescue? Not familiar with the cave at all, but the news descriptions are more confusing than helpful. (Which is typical for a cave rescue in the news.) Apparently it's a tight spot they were stuck in, but apparently the rescuers could get to his face and chisel around him? I'm very confused.
Here is one news story, of the 3-4 I've read, none were overly helpful.

Re: Cave full of large fish
10 hours 30 min agoWe have had a bio inventory done from the CRF, but they werent interested in the fish. In fact, I dont recall a single "cave only" species of any bug or critter, found on the inventory. The water is loaded with life, but it all washes in from the sinkhole plain. Missouri's large caves in Perry county, to the south, all have fish in them as well. Just not like this, and not this large. WE have been dealing with these suckers ever since the cave was discovered. Its an ongoing project, still underway.

Hello from a newbie :)
12 hours 20 min agoHello, I'm Stev, an aspiring caver. Outdoor sports is my passion, fell inlove with it. I can say it's my first true love. The reason I joined the community is I'm very interested about caving. A friend of mine got me interested. When he tells his story about his experiences I'm more motivated. I'm planning to go caving soon, about the location I handed it over to my good friend, he's the pro. I think I'll be needing a lot of helpful caving advise and tips in the future. I'm sure that I will not go caving once, but more in the future.Does anyone can recommend a good cave in SoCal? I really have no idea and I'm only relying to my friend, but it would be great if can suggest a good cave from you guys. Any suggestion and recommendation will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
